A Portrait of God Drawn Exclusively from the Words of Jesus

This portrait has one rule. Every characteristic of God described here is drawn from the direct speech of Jesus as recorded in the four Gospels. Nothing else. Not the letters that followed. Not the councils that came centuries later. Not the theologians who built on top of those councils. Only what Jesus said, in his own words, about the one he called Father.
The portrait that emerges is one most have never seen assembled in one place. When you listen to him — specifically and only about the Father — a God appears whose nature is consistent, ancient, and recognizable. He is not a new God. He is the one who was always there. Jesus did not invent him. Jesus pointed at him.
I. The Father Is Greater
“The Father is greater than I.” — John 14:28
Five words. No qualification. Jesus is speaking in the upper room hours before his arrest, and he names the hierarchy plainly. The Father is above. The Son is below. He says it again from another angle when a man addresses him as “Good Teacher” — “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.” (Mark 10:18). The standard of goodness itself belongs to the Father. Jesus declines the attribution and reassigns it.
He says it a third time about knowledge. “No one knows the hour — not the angels, not the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark 13:32). There is something the Father knows that the Son does not. The asymmetry is real. The Father is the source; the Son is the one who points back at the source. Jesus knew the difference and stated it. The whole portrait that follows is the portrait of the one Jesus said was greater than himself.
II. The Father Is the Source of Life
“As the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.” — John 5:26
The Father is not merely generous with life. He has life in himself. He is the origin from which life proceeds. Everything that lives, lives because it flows from this source. The Son has life because the Father granted it. The disciples have life because the Father is the well.
This is the deepest layer of the portrait and the one most easily missed. Before any of the Father’s actions — before he forgives, before he gives, before he judges — he is the one from whom existence itself comes. “I live because of the Father,” Jesus says elsewhere (John 6:57). The order is not symmetrical. Life moves outward from the Father into everything that is.
III. The Father Acts Before Conditions Are Met
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” — Luke 15:20
The son has prepared a confession. He never delivers it. The father runs — which a man of standing in that culture did not do — and the embrace happens before the speech. The forgiveness is not a response to the apology. It precedes the apology. The only condition is the direction of the son’s movement.
Jesus tells three parables in a row with this structure. The lost sheep does nothing to be found — the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine and goes searching. The lost coin does nothing to be found — the woman lights a lamp and sweeps. Then the prodigal, who is met on the road before he can finish his rehearsed words. The seeking is the Father’s. The initiative is the Father’s. The lost thing is passive throughout.
And the movement begins earlier than even this. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them.” (John 6:44). Even the turning of the prodigal toward home was the Father’s prior work. The Father is not waiting on the road. He is the one who turned the son around in the first place.
IV. The Father Knows Before You Speak
“Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” — Matthew 6:8
Prayer is not the transmission of information to a God who would otherwise miss it. The knowing is prior. The attention is constant. Jesus says this in the context of teaching his disciples not to pile up words as if the Father needed persuading — the Father already knows. The function of prayer is not to inform but to align.
And the Father always hears. At the tomb of Lazarus, Jesus prays aloud only so that the people standing there will hear him pray — but he says first, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me.” (John 11:41–42). Not sometimes. Always. The listening is continuous. The Father is never not attending.
V. The Father Gives Without Discrimination
“He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” — Matthew 5:45
This is the line that should have rewritten every theology of divine wrath, and somehow did not. The Father does not ration his provision according to moral standing. Sun and rain — the sources of life itself in an agricultural society — fall on the evil and the good alike. He does not withhold from the unworthy. He does not give preferentially to the deserving.
And Jesus draws an ethical conclusion from this: be like that. Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you. Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48) — and the perfection in view is precisely this indiscriminate generosity. The Father’s character is the standard. The standard is to give without measuring who deserves.
The gift is the Father’s own pleasure. “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32). The word is eudokēsen — what brings genuine delight. The Father’s delight is to give. The giving is not a transaction. It is the expression of who he is.
“If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11). The best human generosity is the floor. The Father’s generosity is what stands above it.
VI. The Father Sees the Hidden
“Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” — Matthew 6:4, 6:6, 6:18
Three times in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus repeats this — about giving, about prayer, about fasting. The structure is identical each time. Do the thing privately. The Father who sees in secret will respond.
The Father is most attentive precisely where no audience exists. The act no one witnesses is the act he sees most clearly. The implication runs deep: what you are in the room alone is what you actually are, and that is what the Father measures. Public performance is not the field of his attention. The hidden act is.
VII. The Father Wills That None Be Lost
“Your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.” — Matthew 18:14
The explicit will of the Father is universal preservation. Any — the word is heis, one. Not a single one. This is Jesus stating the Father’s intent as clearly as language allows. The Father does not will that anyone be lost.
And the gathering is not bounded by tradition. “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also.” (John 10:16). There are sheep outside any particular fold. They belong to the same shepherd. His intent is to bring them in — not to exclude them for being elsewhere. The Father’s flock is not defined by institutional membership. It is defined by who belongs to him, which is everyone he made.
VIII. The Father Forgives Through the Practice of Forgiving
“Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” — Matthew 6:12
The structure of divine forgiveness in the prayer Jesus taught is reciprocal. The measure you apply to others is the measure applied to you. He makes this explicit immediately after: “If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:14–15).
The mechanism is behavioral. It is not a transaction between you and a mediator. It is the quality of how you treat the people around you. The Father’s forgiveness moves through your forgiveness — not above it, not around it, through it. To receive is to give. To give is to receive. There is no other route described.
IX. The Father Is Spirit and Cannot Be Located
“God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.” — John 4:24
The Samaritan woman at the well asks Jesus where to worship — Jerusalem or Gerizim, her people’s mountain or his people’s temple? His answer dissolves the question. The Father is not in either place. God is spirit. He cannot be housed.
Worship in spirit and truth is a quality of engagement, not a location, not a ritual, not a credential. It is available anywhere, to anyone. No building required. No priest required. No institution required. The Father Jesus describes cannot be accessed through mediation because he is already present wherever truth is enacted.
And the teaching also has no institutional channel. “They will all be taught by God.” (John 6:45, quoting Isaiah and applying it). The Father teaches directly. The learning is not routed through an authorized intermediary. Whoever is willing to hear can hear.
X. The Father Judges by What You Did for the Hungry
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” — Matthew 25:35–36
This is the only extended description Jesus gives of the final judgment. The criterion is entirely behavioral. What you did, with your hands and your time and your resources, for specific categories of vulnerable people. Faith is not named. Belief is not named. Confession is not named. Affiliation is not named.
The people who pass are surprised they passed. They did not know they were doing it for the Son of Man. They were simply feeding people who were hungry. The act was its own meaning.
And Jesus says it from the other side too. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21). The people turned away in that scene called him Lord. They prophesied. They cast out demons in his name. They were turned away. The will of the Father is not fulfilled by correct words. It is fulfilled by right deeds.
This is what the Father weighs. Not what you said you believed. What you actually did.
XI. The Father Is Reached by a Child’s Word
“Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” — Mark 14:36
In the most private and anguished moment of his life — alone in a garden at night, asking for deliverance — Jesus addresses the Father with the Aramaic word a child uses. Abba. Informal. Immediate. The register of a child speaking to a parent in the dark.
This was not standard for first-century Jewish prayer. The formal addresses were available. Jesus chose this one. The God who is greater than him, the source of life, the origin of all that is, the one who sees in secret and judges all the earth — is reached by the same word a small child uses to call across a room.
The entire prayer is surrender. Not what I will, but what you will. But the surrender is offered from intimacy, not from terror. The Father is close enough to speak to from the ground.
XII. The Father Reveals Himself to the Small
“I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.” — Matthew 11:25
The Father chooses the unimpressive as the recipients of understanding. Not the credentialed. Not the educated. The small. The ones who do not already know they know. This connects to everything else in the portrait — the hidden act, the child’s word, the criterion of deeds rather than doctrine. The Father moves toward those who are not protecting themselves with knowledge.
XIII. The Father’s House Has Room
“My Father’s house has many rooms.” — John 14:2
The dwelling place of the Father is spacious. Plural. Prepared. Not a narrow chamber for the few who solved the riddle. Many rooms. Jesus says this to comfort disciples about to lose him. The image he reaches for is space — the Father has room.
The Portrait Assembled
The Father as Jesus described him, in his own words:
Greater than the Son. The source from which the Son also has life. The standard of goodness itself.
Life-bearing. Origin of existence. The well from which everything that lives is drawn.
Pre-emptive. Acts before conditions are met. Runs to meet the returning son. Draws the lost one toward home before the lost one has begun to turn.
Knowing. Aware of every need before it is spoken. Always hearing. Continuous attention.
Indiscriminate. Gives sun and rain to the evil and the good alike. Provides without measuring who deserves. Generosity is his nature, not his judgment.
Present in the hidden. Most attentive to the act no one sees. The Father of the closed room, the private gift, the unwitnessed fast.
Universal in intent. Wills that not one be lost. Has sheep in other folds and intends to bring them in. The gathering is not bounded by tradition.
Reciprocal in forgiveness. Forgives through the practice of forgiveness. The mechanism is behavioral, not transactional.
Unlocated. Spirit. Not housed in any building. Not accessed through any institution. Teaches directly. Reached anywhere by anyone in spirit and truth.
Judge by deeds. Weighs what you did for the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the sick, the imprisoned. The criterion is entirely behavioral. The doctrine you held does not appear.
Intimate. Reached by a child’s word. Close enough to address from the ground in a garden in the dark.
Revealer to the small. Chooses the uncredentialed as the recipients of understanding. Hides what the wise cannot hold.
Spacious. A house with many rooms. Room enough.
What This Portrait Asks
The Father Jesus described is not a tribal deity. He is not the property of a particular institution. He is not reached through correct membership. He is the source of life itself — generous without discrimination, present in the hidden, attentive always, weighing what you did rather than what you said, willing that none be lost, reached by a child’s word from the ground.
He is not new. He was not invented by the man who pointed at him. He was already there, and is already there, and has always been there. Jesus called him Father. He has been called other names by other prophets in other tongues. The names are not the thing. The thing is what stands behind the names — the Wise Lord, the source, the flame that has been burning longer than the traditions that have tried to contain it.
This portrait is the foundation. What was built on top of it — what most people were taught instead — is the subject of what comes next.
