Happy Jashn-e Sadeh! A Celebration of Light and Fire

Today, we come together to celebrate Jashn-e Sadeh, one of the most ancient and joyous festivals in Zoroastrian tradition! On this special day, Zoroastrians around the world honor fire, warmth, and the triumph of light over darkness—a reminder that even in the heart of winter, the flame of hope and truth burns bright.

What is Jashn-e Sadeh?

Jashn-e Sadeh, meaning “the festival of a hundred”, takes place 100 days and nights before Nowruz, marking the countdown to spring and renewal. This sacred festival is deeply rooted in Iranian history, mythology, and spirituality, commemorating the power of fire and its divine connection to Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord.

According to legend, the great King Houshang discovered fire when he struck two stones together while hunting. Instead of feeling disappointment at missing his target, he recognized the fire as a divine gift, a blessing from Ahura Mazda to humanity. And so, the tradition of Sadeh was born—a celebration of the warmth that sustains life, the wisdom that guides us, and the power of unity within our communities.

The Fire That Unites Us

🔥 Lighting the Bonfire
At sunset, communities gather together to light a grand bonfire, symbolizing the eternal flame of truth and righteousness. As the flames rise into the night sky, they represent the victory of warmth over cold, light over darkness, and good over evil.

🔥 Prayers and Gratitude
As the fire burns, prayers and hymns from the Avesta fill the air, expressing gratitude for the gifts of nature, wisdom, and community. Many take this moment to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the future, embracing the lessons of resilience and faith.

🔥 Feasting and Joy
Jashn-e Sadeh is also a time for family, friends, and festivity! Tables are filled with delicious nuts, dried fruits, stews, and sweets, and laughter echoes as people sing, dance, and share stories—keeping alive the traditions of our ancestors.

🔥 Acts of Charity
Just as fire gives warmth to all, Sadeh encourages us to share kindness and generosity with those in need. Many Zoroastrians take this opportunity to donate food, clothing, and resources to the less fortunate, ensuring that everyone can experience the warmth of community and compassion.

Why Jashn-e Sadeh Still Matters Today

In an ever-changing world, the message of Sadeh remains timeless:

☀️ Light will always overcome darkness.
🔥 Wisdom and truth are guiding forces in our lives.
💛 Community and kindness strengthen the bonds of humanity.

As we gather around the fire, whether in person or in spirit, let us carry the flame of Sadeh into our daily lives—spreading love, knowledge, and hope wherever we go.
