John 8 Tells You How to Identify Jesus’ Father

There are moments when a text stops being complicated because the speaker tells you exactly what test to use.

John 8 is one of those moments.

Jesus is arguing about fatherhood.

Not nationality.

Not genealogy.

Not religious branding.

Fatherhood.

His opponents make their claim:

We have one Father — God.

And Jesus refuses to accept the claim merely because they said it.

He answers:

If God were your Father, you would love me.

IF.

That word matters.

Their declaration does not establish paternity.

Then Jesus tells them who their father is:

You are of your father the devil.

And then he identifies the character of that father.

Murderer.

No truth in him.

Liar.

Father of the Lie.

Then Jesus turns around and describes himself:

I tell you the truth.

John could hardly make the contrast clearer.

One father belongs to the Lie.

Jesus belongs to Truth.

And Jesus says you identify the father by what comes out of the child.

That is the test.

Now use it.

DO NOT START WITH THE NAME

This is where theology usually cheats.

It begins with the answer.

“Jesus was Jewish.”

Therefore:

“His Father must be Yahweh.”

Then every difficult passage gets forced underneath that conclusion.

But John 8 does not let inherited labels settle the dispute.

The people arguing with Jesus already claim God.

Jesus knows they claim God.

Jesus still says:

If God were your Father…

Then:

You are of your father the devil.

Then:

you do not hear because you are not of God.

Then later:

you do not know my Father.

The argument is not:

“You pronounced the wrong divine name.”

The argument is:

Your relationship to Truth exposes who your father actually is.

That distinction is the whole case.

John 8:44–47 explicitly connects the opposing father with absence of truth, lying, and the Lie, while Jesus identifies himself with telling the truth.

So stop starting with the label.

Start with the profile.

NOW BRING IN RESURRECTION

Jesus believed in resurrection.

That puts him on one side of a real first-century dispute.

The Sadducees denied resurrection.

The Pharisaic/apocalyptic stream affirmed it.

That means by Jesus’ lifetime resurrection already existed within Judaism.

Fine.

Nobody needs to deny that.

But now put the doctrine on the historical timeline.

Daniel 12 is the Hebrew Bible’s first unambiguous individual resurrection text.

And Daniel 7–12 belongs to the Antiochene crisis around 167–164 BCE, not to a sixth-century Babylonian prophet writing hundreds of years earlier. Your resurrection dossier correctly fixes that sequence: Daniel’s resurrection appears after centuries of Iranian contact, while Iranian religion already possessed moral judgment, differentiated destinies and an established resurrection trajectory before Daniel.

So by Jesus’ time there are two religious Father-frameworks that actually matter to this investigation:

The God of Israel as understood by resurrection-affirming Jewish movements.

And:

Ahura Mazda.

Now compare them.

Not by ethnicity.

Not by which scripture John’s author quotes.

By the test Jesus just gave us.

Truth and the Lie.

MAZDA IS ALREADY FATHER OF AŠA

Long before John writes his Father-versus-Lie argument, Zoroastrian theology has a divine structure built around:

Ahura Mazda.

Aša.

Vohu Manah.

And the opposing Lie.

Mary Boyce’s Encyclopaedia Iranica treatment notes that in the Gathas Ahura Mazda is spoken of as creator and father of Aša, as well as father of Vohu Manah, Good Mind.

Do not glide past that.

Jesus’ test in John 8 is:

Who belongs to Truth?

The hostile father is:

father of the Lie.

And centuries earlier the Iranian supreme Lord is already described as:

Father of Aša.

Truth.

Rightness.

The true order.

Against:

Druj.

The Lie.

This is not somebody noticing that two religions both use the word “good.”

The architecture itself is the issue.

Father → Truth

against

hostile father → Lie.

John 8 is operating on that exact moral axis.

NOW LOOK AT THE OTHER CANDIDATE

The full Hebrew Bible profile is not simply:

Truth belongs to YHWH.

Lie belongs somewhere else.

The record is messier than that.

In 1 Kings 22, YHWH’s council sends a lying spirit.

In Ezekiel 14:9, the text can put deception directly into YHWH’s first-person agency.

In 2 Samuel 24, YHWH incites David to the census.

Then Chronicles rewrites that census episode and places the incitement on an adversary.

That change matters.

When we audited the record, the result was not:

“Violence left God.”

It did not.

God continues to judge, kill and destroy in later scripture.

What moves more clearly is:

deception.

temptation.

incitement.

corrupting agency.

Your Blood Ledger states the finding directly:

Judicial violence does not migrate. Deception does.

And it notes the exact relevance to John 8: the Devil is eventually characterized through the Lie, while earlier texts could place deceptive agency with God himself.

That is the development.

The tradition increasingly learns to place the Lie somewhere else.

Zoroastrianism had already done it.

THE TWO PROFILES

Now put them beside each other.

AHURA MAZDA

Father of Aša.

Father of Good Mind.

Truth and right order belong to the divine side.

Druj — the Lie — belongs to the opposing side.

Moral choice determines alignment.

Judgment exposes alignment.

Resurrection and final renovation belong to the later Iranian eschatological system.

Evil is ultimately defeated.

THE FULL EARLIER YHWH RECORD

Truth and faithfulness are absolutely attributed to YHWH.

Mercy is attributed to YHWH.

Justice is attributed to YHWH.

Life is attributed to YHWH.

But so are texts involving:

lying spirits,

deception,

hardening,

incitement,

harmful supernatural agency,

and punitive legislation.

Then later texts increasingly differentiate some of those functions away from direct divine agency.

That history is sitting inside the Bible.

THEN JESUS GIVES THE TEST

Jesus does not say:

“Find my Father by finding the oldest ethnic tradition attached to me.”

He does not say:

“Whoever claims God automatically has God as Father.”

John gives him the opposite argument.

They claim God.

Jesus rejects the sufficiency of their claim.

Then he makes paternity visible through resemblance.

Your father is revealed by what you do.

The Devil lies.

His children participate in the Lie.

Jesus tells Truth.

The one who belongs to God hears Truth.

That is the Johannine test.

So apply it consistently.

Which ancient divine architecture gives Truth to the Father and the Lie to the opposing power without first having to move deception out of God over centuries?

Mazda.

“BUT JOHN 8:54 SAYS THEIR GOD IS HIS FATHER”

Good.

Read the whole sentence.

Jesus calls his Father the one they say is their God.

And then immediately says:

you have not known him.

But I know him.

And if I denied knowing him:

I would be a liar like you.

There it is again.

Lie.

Truth.

Knowledge.

Claim.

Paternity.

John does not finish the argument by saying:

“You correctly know my Father because you use his correct name.”

Jesus says the opposite:

you do not know him.

Their verbal identification is acknowledged.

Their actual knowledge is denied.

That is not a footnote.

That is the argument.

THE RESURRECTION TEST NARROWS THE FIELD

By Jesus’ lifetime, resurrection is not everywhere.

Inside Judaism itself, the doctrine divides sects.

Sadducees:

No resurrection.

Resurrection-affirming Jewish movements:

Yes.

Jesus:

Yes.

And outside that developing Jewish resurrection framework stands the older Iranian religious tradition associated with Mazda, whose eschatology already includes moral judgment, opposed destinies, resurrection, the defeat of evil and renovation.

So Diesel’s question becomes brutally simple:

When Jesus speaks about the Father through:

Truth

life

resurrection

moral paternity

opposition to the Lie

what ancient Father-profile fits that combination most cleanly?

Now add chronology.

Iranian moral architecture is older.

Iranian resurrection evidence is older than Daniel’s Maccabean resurrection text.

Persian-Judean contact precedes Daniel.

Later Jewish theology develops increasingly differentiated adversarial agency.

And then John’s Jesus makes the hostile father the Father of the Lie.

Meanwhile:

Mazda was already Father of Aša.

TWO FATHERS. ONE TEST.

Do not misunderstand the claim.

This is not:

“Only two religions in human history ever imagined somebody returning from death.”

That would be stupid.

The historical world contains gods returning, heroic immortalization, soul immortality, afterlife cults and all kinds of death-survival traditions.

We are asking something narrower.

Which Father-frameworks are actually relevant to the resurrection theology surrounding Jesus?

The serious comparison is:

Ahura Mazda.

and

the God of Israel as represented by resurrection-affirming Second Temple Judaism.

Now Jesus gives us the discriminator.

Truth versus Lie.

One profile has a complicated earlier record in which deceptive agency sometimes belongs directly to God and is later increasingly externalized.

The other already places Truth at the center of the divine order and the Lie against it.

One is developing toward the architecture John eventually displays.

The other already possesses it.

That is why Mazda matters.

AND THEN THE MAGI WALK INTO THE ROOM

As if the chronology were not already uncomfortable enough, Matthew begins Jesus’ story with:

MAGI FROM THE EAST.

Eastern Magi recognize the child.

They follow the sign.

They find him.

They fall before him.

They give him treasure.

They receive revelation.

They refuse Herod.

They leave by another route.

The Iranian religious world is not hidden ten layers underneath Christianity.

Matthew puts its most famous priestly name at Jesus’ cradle.

Now combine everything.

The older Father-of-Truth architecture.

The older Iranian moral afterlife.

Resurrection before Daniel.

Centuries of Persian contact.

The late Maccabean arrival of explicit resurrection in Hebrew scripture.

The gradual separation of deceptive agency from God.

The Magi at Jesus’ beginning.

Jesus affirming resurrection.

Then John 8:

my Father.

your father.

Truth.

Lie.

you do not know him.

At some point “coincidence” stops being an explanation.

THE VERDICT

Jesus gives us the test himself.

Do not ask merely:

What God do these people claim?

Ask:

Whose character do they reproduce?

That is John 8.

The liar belongs to the father of the Lie.

The one who speaks Truth belongs to God.

Now walk backward through history.

Before John:

the Lie is increasingly being expelled from direct divine agency.

Before Christian resurrection:

Jewish resurrection develops late in the Second Temple period.

Before Daniel:

Persian contact.

Before Daniel:

Iranian resurrection.

Before Daniel:

Aša and Druj.

And standing at the top of that older Iranian structure is:

AHURA MAZDA.

Father of Aša.

Father of Truth.

So when Diesel asks:

Who is the Father Jesus describes?

The answer does not come from pretending John pronounced a Persian name.

It comes from following Jesus’ own test.

Follow Truth.

Follow resurrection backward.

Follow the Lie backward.

Follow the chronology backward.

And the same Father keeps standing at the end of the trail.
