Comparative Annex: Preserved Parallels, Research Leads, and Rejected Proofs

Purpose

This annex preserves potentially meaningful Zoroastrian–Johannine comparisons that are not strong enough to carry the central Mazda–Father identification by themselves. Their exclusion from the principal proof does not make them worthless. It means their proper evidentiary role is supporting pattern, research lead, or negative control.

The governing rule is:

Do not throw away a real parallel merely because it is not decisive; do not call a parallel decisive merely because it is real.

Three shelves

Shelf Function Admission standard
Developed supporting patterns Adds a specific correspondence to an already established cluster Primary text, dating control, competing explanation, and bounded conclusion
Research leads Preserves a serious comparison requiring more chronological or transmission work Textual basis exists, but uniqueness or genealogy is weak
Rejected as proof Records why an attractive resemblance cannot responsibly support the argument Generic motif, mistaken citation, collapsed layers, or stronger independent explanation

Comparative ledger

ID Comparison Grade Shelf Exact value
PM-018 Rašnu’s judging role beside the Father delegating judgment to the Son in John 5 C+ Developed support A genuine division-of-roles correspondence; not distinctively Mazda-specific
PM-019 Haurvatāt–Amərətāt, Wholeness–Immortality, beside Johannine abundant and eternal life C+/B− Developed support A specific Iranian pair that supports the wider life cluster; earliest functions must not be oversimplified
PM-020 Vərəθraγna/Bahrām, victory, beside “I have overcome the world” in John 16:33 D Rejected as proof Victory-over-adversity is too universal without a tighter textual package
PM-021 Ātar, Mazda’s “son,” as light/fire, giver of the straightest way to non-liars, and instrument of judgment beside John’s Son–Light–Way–Truth–Judgment cluster B− structure / C genealogy Developed support The strongest new multi-feature correspondence; not an identity equation or dependence proof
PM-022 Haoma as consumed, health-giving and death-averting sacred life beside John 6’s life-giving food and drink C+ Research lead A real ritual-life parallel whose late immortality elaboration and Jewish comparators limit it
PM-023 Mazda with the six great beneficent powers as a divine heptad beside Revelation’s seven Spirits of God C Research lead Useful for broader Iranian–apocalyptic architecture; Zechariah is Revelation’s immediate source

PM-018 — Rašnu and delegated judgment

Iranian evidence

Rašnu is the “straightest” or most just judge in the Younger Avestan tradition. He belongs to the Mazda-centered divine order and participates in judgment associated with the soul’s passage. He does not occur as a developed judge in the Older Avestan Gathas. See Encyclopaedia Iranica, “Rašn Yašt”.

Johannine comparison

John 5:22 says that the Father judges no one but gives all judgment to the Son; 5:27 adds authority to execute judgment. The correspondence is not “Jesus is Rašnu.” It is the structural allocation of judicial work: the supreme deity’s order includes a distinct agent who performs judgment.

Control and grade

Delegated judgment occurs in many religious and political systems. Daniel 7 and Jewish agency traditions are closer literary sources for John. Rašnu therefore supports a comparative divine-role pattern but not a distinctive Mazda identification.

Grade: C+.

PM-019 — Haurvatāt and Amərətāt: wholeness and immortality

Iranian evidence

Haurvatāt and Amərətāt are an ancient pair conventionally rendered Wholeness/Integrity and Immortality. They appear together in the Gathas and remain paired in later Zoroastrian tradition. Their meanings are theological, ethical, ritual, and eventually cosmological; some early occurrences may concern the liquid and solid portions of ritual offering rather than a simple doctrine of “flourishing now and eternal life later.” See Encyclopaedia Iranica, “Gathas I”.

Johannine comparison

John repeatedly distinguishes and joins present divine life and final eternal life: life “abundantly” in John 10:10; eternal life already possessed in John 3:16 and 5:24; resurrection on the last day in John 6.

Control and grade

Wholeness and immortality form a more specific pair than a free-floating word match, but present flourishing plus postmortem life is a natural theological combination. The comparison strengthens the archive’s life profile; it does not demonstrate borrowing or identity.

Grade: C+/B−.

PM-020 — Vərəθraγna and overcoming

Vərəθraγna is the Iranian divinity of victory and obstacle-smashing power. John 16:33 presents Jesus saying that he has overcome the world. The resemblance is real at the level of victory language but lacks distinctive shared structure. Kings, heroes, gods, martyrs, and saviors across cultures overcome adversaries.

The lead is preserved so that it is not repeatedly rediscovered and promoted without control. It may become useful only if a tighter constellation of wording, function, date, and transmission is identified.

Grade: D — preserve, but do not use as proof.

PM-021 — Ātar: Son, Light, Way, Truth, and Judgment

The full analysis appears in Evidence Intake 011.

The Younger Avesta repeatedly calls Fire “Ahura Mazda’s son.” Mihr Yašt 10.3 says that Fire, Mazda’s son, gives the straightest way to those who do not lie to Mithra. Iranian fire is associated with Aša/Truth and becomes the instrument of divine judgment. John presents the Son as Light, Way, Truth, and delegated Judge.

The evidentiary force comes from the cluster rather than any isolated fire metaphor. The comparison is meaningful but cannot erase the differences between a divine fire and John’s incarnate personal Son.

Grade: B− structural correspondence / C historical genealogy.

PM-022 — Haoma and life-giving consumption

The full analysis appears in Evidence Intake 012.

Yasna 9–11 treats Haoma as plant, prepared drink, and divine ritual figure associated with health, strength, victory, and the keeping-away of death. Later Zoroastrian cosmology connects White Haoma with the immortality drink of the renovation. John 6 makes eating and drinking participation in the descending giver of life, eternal life, and last-day resurrection.

Manna, Jewish Wisdom, and Christian meal tradition are John’s immediate controls. The final White-Haoma immortality system is preserved in later Iranian sources and must not be backdated mechanically.

Grade: C+.

PM-023 — The divine heptad and Revelation’s seven Spirits

The full analysis appears in Evidence Intake 013.

The Gathas contain the great beneficent qualities later organized as the Amesha Spentas; Zoroastrian tradition presents Mazda with six principal powers as a divine sevenfold order. Revelation repeatedly describes seven Spirits of God before the throne and sent into the world.

Zechariah’s seven lamps and eyes are the immediate literary source, and Revelation cannot simply be assumed to share authorship with the Fourth Gospel. This remains a broader apocalyptic-architecture comparison.

Grade: C.

Promotion decision

  • Promote PM-021 as a developed supporting exhibit because it joins five roles in one controlled comparison.
  • Retain PM-018 and PM-019 as bounded supporting patterns.
  • Hold PM-022 and PM-023 as research leads pending stronger dating and transmission work.
  • Retain PM-020 as rejected proof so the archive visibly refuses a generic victory parallel.

None of these exhibits changes the core conclusion by itself. Their cumulative value is showing that the Mazda-centered system contains a wider coordinated vocabulary of Son, light/fire, straight way, non-deception, judgment, wholeness, immortality, sacred life, and distributed divine agency. The annex strengthens range while protecting the main case from resemblance inflation.
