Divine Epistemic Agency Ladder

Purpose

This ladder orders the principal passages by distance from a direct divine false assertion. It does not assume that greater proximity automatically means greater moral guilt. It measures how directly the text assigns the production or obstruction of belief.

Ladder

Level Agency form Principal evidence Textual finding Identity relevance
0 Direct divine assertion believed false none securely established the archive does not claim a first-person confession, “I lied” absent as a standalone exhibit
1 First-person divine claim of deceiving/enticing a speaker Ezekiel 14:9 “I, Yahweh, have deceived/enticed that prophet” very high for broad truth-source test
2 Commissioning false testimony 1 Kings 22:19–23 spirit of falsehood authorized in prophets’ mouths; success predicted very high, though mediated
3 Sending delusion toward belief in falsehood 2 Thessalonians 2:9–12 God sends energeia planēs so recipients believe pseudos very high New Testament counterexample
4 Designing a misleading truthful disclosure 1 Samuel 16:1–5 sacrificial explanation conceals anointing mission medium-high; intention and justification disputed
5 Blinding, hardening, or stupor Exodus; John 12:39–40; Romans 11:7–8 truth-recognition or response is obstructed medium; not verbal deception
6 Limited request or possible diplomatic pretext Exodus 3:18; 5:3; 8:27 three-day-sacrifice request within permanent liberation low-medium; alternative readings strong
7 Permitting false signs or a truth test Deuteronomy 13:1–3 false prophet becomes occasion for divine testing low; no statement that God authored the false oracle
8 Reassigning hostile causation 2 Samuel 24:1 / 1 Chronicles 21:1 census incitement moves from Yahweh to an adversary developmental agency evidence, not a lie exhibit
9 Prophetic accusation of deception Jeremiah 4:10; 20:7 prophet accuses God; translation and speaker control required lower because accusation is not narrator certification

Why Level 1 is not called a direct lie

Ezekiel 14:9 is the strongest first-person divine-deception text, but the verse does not quote the deceptive content or state that Yahweh himself delivered a known false proposition to the inquirer. Its force is causal: Yahweh claims to have deceived or enticed the prophet who speaks. That is enough for direct divine deceptive agency under the broad test, but not enough for a narrow first-person verbal-lie claim.

The 1 Kings–Ezekiel lexical lock

The same Hebrew root, pātâ, links Levels 1 and 2.

Passage Root use Mechanism
1 Kings 22:20 Yahweh asks who will pātâ Ahab toward battle and death council solicits method
1 Kings 22:21 spirit volunteers to pātâ Ahab intermediary accepts role
1 Kings 22:22 spirit will be a šeqer spirit; Yahweh says it will pātâ and prevail false testimony authorized
Ezekiel 14:9 prophet is pātâ; Yahweh says “I have pātâ that prophet” direct first-person agency claim

This is not four independent votes. It is one coherent lexical-agency complex.

Judicial-context matrix

Text Prior culpability Judicial purpose Warning or disclosure Remaining tension
1 Kings 22 Ahab’s history and rejection of Micaiah lethal judgment Micaiah reveals the council vision before battle false prophecy is still commissioned
Ezekiel 14 idols held in the inquirer’s heart; corrupt prophet punishment and purification Ezekiel states the rule Yahweh still claims deception/enticement
2 Thessalonians 2 refusal to love truth; pleasure in unrighteousness condemnation apostolic warning states the sequence God still sends delusion toward false belief
John 12 persistent unbelief after signs fulfillment/judicial hardening narrator explains the condition inability to believe remains divinely framed
Romans 11 corporate-historical unbelief remnant/election argument Paul interprets the hardening God gives stupor and “the rest” are hardened

Judicial context is therefore an explanation of purpose, not a denial of action.

Truth-predicate comparison

Absolute or intrinsic truth predicate Immediate scope Epistemic-agency countertext Exact tension
Numbers 23:19: God does not lie Balaam’s blessing and divine reliability 1 Kings 22 reliable declared purpose versus commissioned false prophecy
1 Samuel 15:29: Israel’s Glory does not lie/prove false Saul’s rejected kingship 1 Samuel 16 declared judgment remains; cover disclosure protects new anointing
Titus 1:2: God is apseudēs promise of eternal life 2 Thessalonians 2:11 promise truthfulness versus sent delusion
Hebrews 6:18: impossible for God to lie/prove false promise and oath 2 Thessalonians 2:11 oath impossibility versus judicial false-belief agency
James 1:13–18: God tempts no one; Father gives through word of truth temptation, desire, death, good gifts, truthful birth Ezekiel 14:9; hardening/incitement Father-source causal partition versus divine enticement texts
John 8:44: devil is father of the Lie native desire, lie, murder, paternity 1 Kings 22; Ezekiel 14; John 12 native-source partition versus retained divine judicial agency

Same-rules Jesus control

Text Difficulty Control Grade
John 7:8–10 “I am not going up” followed by private ascent “not yet” variant; present-time and manner-of-ascent readings A difficulty; C lie claim
John 16:12–13 further truth withheld withholding is openly stated and future disclosure promised transparent staging, not deception
John 18:20 “nothing in secret” despite private discourse concerns public teaching under interrogation, not exhaustive speech settings cannot be used as an absolute

Final ladder ruling

The strongest dossier claim is not that every rung is a direct lie. It is that the canon attributes a continuous range of intentional truth-impairing agency to Yahweh/God—from first-person deception, through commissioned false testimony and sent delusion, to hardening and strategic concealment. The grades differ by rung, but the broad truth-source problem does not vanish when the narrow direct-lie rung is empty.
