Father of Aša: Translation and Grammar Ledger

Reading rule

This ledger distinguishes the Avestan diagnostic from the English gloss. No row is allowed to derive evidentiary force merely from capitalizing “Truth,” treating a poetic hypostasis as a human child, or choosing “creator” where “establisher” is also viable.

Locus Diagnostic wording Humbach–Faiss 2010 Hintze / Boyce control Stable minimum Limit
Y. 44.3 zaθā ... ptā ašahyā paouruyō asks who by procreation is primordial Father of Truth Hintze: Father “by begetting”; Boyce: Mazda called Aša’s Father explicit primordial Father-of-Aša question using birth language interrogative; expected answer supplied by context and other loci
Y. 47.2 ptā ašahyā mazdā “He, the Wise One, is the father of truth” Hintze treats Mazda as addressed as Father of Aša; Boyce lists it as Father language declarative Mazda–Father–Aša relation punctuation/sentence division is editorial, though the paternity phrase remains
Y. 31.8 Mazda plus Father of Good Thought and dąmiš of Aša “father of good thought … true establisher of truth” Boyce uses “creator” of Aša Mazda founds/establishes/originates Aša do not claim one unanimous English verb
Y. 37.1 yō gąm.cā aṣ̌əm.cā dāt̰ Wise Lord “created the cow and truth” Hintze translates “created” and records create/arrange dispute Mazda creates, sets, or establishes Aša within all good reality no ex nihilo claim; verb semantics debated
Y. 58.4 hē ptā ... ašaŋhācā not part of the Gathic translation set Hintze: “this one is the father … of truth,” probably Mazda early reception of Father-of-Truth formula referent and manuscript details controlled
Y. 47.3 manuscript , proposed restoration from ptā Humbach–Faiss: beneficent Father of this spirit Hintze prefers Father; Kellens–Pirart construe a demonstrative disputed neighboring Father-of-Spirit claim excluded from the minimum Father-of-Aša proof

Translation substitution test

If a critic substitutes … The archive concedes … What still follows
Order for Truth Aša is broader than English propositional truth Mazda is Father/originator of the moral-cosmic order opposed to Druj
Righteousness for Truth Aša includes normative rightness Mazda is Father/originator of righteousness/right order
Establish for create No creation-from-nothing inference Mazda is the establishing source of Aša
Arrange for create in Y. 37.1 has a broader semantic range the Wise Lord orders Aša with the wholly good creation
Poetic paternity for literal paternity no biological reproduction claim a stable theological source relation remains
Interrogative for declarative at Y. 44.3 the verse itself asks Y. 47.2 declares and Y. 37.1 independently assigns origination

Minimum proof packet

The smallest defensible packet contains three pieces:

  1. Yasna 44.3: explicit ptā + genitive Aša + begetting language.
  2. Yasna 47.2: declarative Mazda identification as Father of Aša.
  3. Yasna 37.1: direct Old Avestan creation/ordering of Aša by the Wise Lord.

Yasna 31.8 and 58.4 then corroborate founder/establisher language and early reception. Yasna 47.3 is not required.
